Practicing Authentic Assessment: Aspiring Social Studies Teachers Teach in Schools

Laura J. Dull, Olana O’Connor, Elizabeth Scheffel

Abstract

For our social studies pedagogical methods classes, we developed a carefully scaffolded process that culminates with our preservice teachers teaching lessons in secondary school classrooms. As they teach in front of adolescents in real schools, preservice teachers engage in a truly “authentic” performance task. After explaining our theoretical framework and describing our partnership with schools developed over almost 20 years, we will draw from surveys to illustrate what happens when teacher candidates teach in actual classrooms and what makes their experiences authentic and meaningful.
